Summary
Add a SummaryIt is the story of a teenage girl who, after being raped and murdered, watches from Heaven as her family and friends struggle to move on with their lives while she comes to terms with her own death. The novel received much critical praise and became an instant bestseller.
An unusual coming-of-age story in which Susie, the 14-year-old narrator, watches from heaven over her family, her murderer and the police detective working on her case. Fourteen-year-old Susie looks down from heaven and describes the horrifying events of her murder, while her family struggle to cope with the pain of her death.

Add a Quote“Had my brother really seen me somehow, or he was he merely a little boy telling beautiful lies?” (p. 95) “How to commit the perfect murder was an old game in heaven. I always chose the icicle: the weapon melts away.” (p. 125)

Comment
Add a CommentIt’s the supporting characters that make this book so memorable. Her distracted mother with the ‘ocean eyes”, her friend Ruth who’s soul she continues to touch from her heaven; her eccentric alcoholic grandma Lynn; her brilliant sister Lindsey; but most poignant of all her father Jack Salmon who just doesn’t know how to let go of his little girl. Imaginative, original & thought provoking; this is just a great story.
Much better than the movie. Well written!
what a grate book...And the movie is too ii read it two times already and ima read it again.
The Lovely Bones is a wonderfully well-written book! I will admit that the first chapter may be emotionally difficult to read through because it goes into vivid detail on how Susie Salmon dies. After the first chapter, Alice Sebold more than effectively presents how her entire family, friends, and acquaintances work through the process of dealing with Susie's death based on how Susie sees it from her space in Heaven. Susie also 'follows' Mr. Harvey from time to time until the end comes for him. Sebold also expresses the sorrow that Susie feels in wanting to help but finding that she has limits as to what she can do as well as the resentment that Susie feels that Mr. Harvey manages to get away with his actions, although the focus is more on the sorrow than the resentment. I would recommend this book for older high school students and adults.
yikes!!...dark...very dark...but good!!
such a good book with good messages but hate the ending as it dosen't fill the hate for mr harvey. also what was up with that twist ending its seemed like something out of ghost whisper. but other then those two things its a good book but very sad cried alot
So many people have said that this book was so hard to finish. It was the opposite for me. I loved her version of the there-after.
Very moving and tragic. I read this before I had a child, and it was sad then, but it would be even more heart wrenching now that I'm a mother.
The book is beautifully written in the point of view of Susie. The book was beautiful and moving a true work of art.
never read the book but ive seen the movie and it was super sad. i hate the old child molester and people like him...
