I appreciated this book for its educational value, however, I found the story itself rather dull.
I kept waiting for the climax, for something really explosive to take place. It didn't happen, but you do learn a lot about Chinese culture. I'll give it that. Read my full review here: http://www.examiner.com/review/book-review-snow-flower-and-the-secret-fan-by-lisa-see
I enjoyed the history and culture of this story. Moving story and very interesting historical information. Recommended.
Just finished reading this story and it has left me feeling so sad and introspective! (and SO GLAD I have 'big flipping fish feet'! ) An excellent historical novel that follows Lily and her friend Snowflower, their traditional lifestyles and the relationships that develop in rural China. SAD STORY, but a very good read. Check out Lisa See on the internet to see pictures of Bound feet = ouch!
This was a re-read for me and I enjoyed it much more the second time around. the first time around it felt like I was reading a set text for school aimed at teaching about the status and treatment of women in (not so very) ancient China. Freed from this distraction on the second reading I was free to feel really heartbroken and moved by the circumstances and challenges faced by each of the characters. I would really recommend this book now. Everyone else in my book group loved it.
Beautifully written window into the secret world of the women's chamber. I was disappointed with the way the two women's lives turned out and particularly Lily's treatment of Snowflower, but that was the author's intention.
chinese friends, feet binding, one married into wealthy family the other very poor.
I read historical fiction to get a feel for the time period and to read about characters that are not the rich and famous. The history of China has always fascinated me and Lisa See has given us a slice of life that is at times cruel and beautiful that lets us see not only the life of women in China from a century ago, but also lets us feel their triumphs and tragedies. Things that may have been trivial at the time, but are as important to anyone who wishes to see a little bit into the past.
An interesting novel about food binding and Chinese culture in the 1800s. I have mixed feelings about the ending. It was disappointing as it just became less of a story and more of a listing of things that happened. Although at the same time it was necessarily and purposeful.
