Exceeded expectations. The book jumps back and forth between present day and adolescent.
light, very light
I picked up this Jennifer Weiner book because I wanted a fun escape, and thought I'd have sympathy for the main character, Addie Downs. My problem was that I had too much sympathy, for this book had every issue I've ever had: weight, best friends gone bad, insecurity, infertility, an overwhelming sense of loyalty, escaping the law... okay, maybe I haven't had that last one. Anyway, I don't think I am being objective when I say it felt like it dragged a little in the beginning, because I just didn't want the reminders. In truth, like all the Weiner books I've read, it was well thought-out and constructed. There was only one part with Dan Swansea that I felt was a little "deux ex machina" (figuratively, not exactly that device) where I had to swallow my disbelief a little. Everything else was realistic given the circumstances and completely sympathetic. I could easily feel like I was there (I think I was, once!). I think Weiner wonderfully captured a truth about female friendships (and possibly male): if you've love somebody enough, they always seem to fit right back into your life despite time and circumstance. Yes, light and predictable but Weiner never lets the expected become an excuse for bad writing or ill-constructed paths there. Not here.
Was a quick and easy read. Was good but not as enjoyable as some of her other books. Followed a little mystery type detour like her Goodnight Nobody book. Found I wanted to give character Valerie a shake more than once...her antics were a little annoying.
Not what I expected. I really enjoyed Weiner's other books, but this one didn't quite keep my interest like her previous books had. . .
