They live in a tiny, 11-foot-square soundproofed cell in a converted shed in the kidnapper's yard. The sociopath, whom Jack has dubbed Old Nick, visits at night, grudgingly doling out food and supplies. But Ma, as Jack calls her, proves to be resilient and resourceful--and attempts a nail-biting escape.

Emma Donoghue interview
Jack and Ma live in a locked room that measures eleven foot by eleven. When he turns five, he starts to ask questions, and his mother reveals to him that there is a world outside. Told entirely in Jacks voice, ROOM is no horror story or tearjerker, but a celebration of resilience and the love between parent and child.

Add a CommentI am in the middle of this book and cannot put it down. The author's ability speak through the five year old protagonist is incredible!
This novel had me on the edge of my seat until the last third of the book. Excellent (yet horrible) story, and the ending was beautiful but it definitely lost its tone by the end. Will recommend it.
I recommend this book! Many have complained about the "poor" grammar of the 5-year-old narrator, but what do people expect? I have a four year old and her grammar is far from perfect. If the author were to make Jack’s grammar any better, then people would continue to complain because they would say it is unrealistic he could speak so well at a young age. Jack being the narrator gives the book beauty and innocence and the book as a whole is well written. Worth reading! I could not put it down once I started even though I really should have been studying for my final exams!
Great story, however, I didn't really like the way it was written. I think writing the story in Jack's perspective took away from some of the finer details and descriptions of Room. I thought it would have been more effective if perhaps the author alternated between Ma and Jack. I also thought the play of events happened very quickly and did not really have a smoothe transition. The author spent a lot of time in Room and jumped straight into their reentry into society. I just thought the book was lacking in flow. The end was also very disappointing. Again, a sudden change in events without a smoothe transition.
Excellent read!!! Very disturbing subject.
A very haunting book for the faint of heart, but it is a story that must be told. The reader will gain a greater understanding of the psychological affects of forced captivity.
I loved this book. It was interesting, being written in the point of view of a five year old. It was very disturbing, to see what Jack saw as reality. I definately recommend this book!
Once I got into it, I could not put this book down. It is told in the words of a quirky 5 year-old who suffers from bad grammar and poor sentence structure. Unfortunately, this device was hard to read and a little hard to believe, considering he had access to TV and a well spoken mother. That said, the story is a grabber. The Room was a prison to Ma and the whole world to Jack prior to their dramatic escape.Their reintroduction into society makes for fascinating reading.
Fantastic story with terribly annoying narration. Rather than a story being told by a child, it more than anything sounded like a story by an adult trying to be a child, and failing the part miserably. I guess I just don't understand how a child would simply fail to use any pronouns or conjunctions after spending 5 years in complete isolation with a mother who speaks proper English.
Feb 16, 2012. Picked this up at the library today. Was excited to see that it was by the same author as "The woman who gave birth to rabbits". Read that one a month or so ago. Was short stories and I really enjoyed them all. Had a peek at this one tonight. It is hard to get used to the voice of the little boy. Looking forward to getting into it a bit more. (Gotta finish "April Fools Day" by Bryce Courtenay....it's awesome so far!) Monday Feb 20, 2012. 10:30 pm. Finished AFD and on to this adventure! Tues.Feb 21, 2012 5:45pm...on page 122, it started to get interesting about page 105. Looking forward to reading more, hopefully finish tomorrow, but I also need to vacuum, so which will win, I'm not sure. Stay tuned! Thurs. Feb 23, 2012 8:15 am. Just finished. Loved the ending. I will definitely read another Emma Donoghue book! This story got me thinking.
