Summary
Add a SummaryEnglish nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall and husband Frank take a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. When Claire walks through a cleft stone in an ancient henge, she's somehow transported to 1743. She encounters Frank's evil ancestor, British captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, and is adopted by another clan. Claire nurses young soldier James Fraser, a gallant, merry redhead, and the two begin a romance, seeing each other through many perilous, swashbuckling adventures involving Black Jack. Scenes of the Highlanders' daily life blend poignant emotions with Scottish wit and humor. Eventually Sassenach (outlander) Claire finds a chance to return to 1945, and must choose between distant memories of Frank and her happy, uncomplicated existence with Jamie.
In Scotland with her husband on a second honeymoon after World War II, Claire enters a circle of stones and is transported back to the Battle of Culloden 200 years earlier, where she must marry a Scot to save her husband
Quotes
Add a QuoteI was having trouble with the scale of things. A man killed with a musket was just as dead as one killed with a mortar. It was just that the mortar killed impersonally, destroying dozens of men, while the musket was fired by one man who could see the eyes of the one he killed. That made it murder, it seemed to me, not war. How many men to make a war?

Add a CommentThis 7 book (Gabaldon is writing the 8th) series is terrific. Well written and researched historical fiction.
It took me a bit to get into the story, but once I got used to the writing I was hooked! To date, I've read the whole series and am eagerly awaiting the release of the next book.
I love this book! it is impossible to not fall in love with the characters and the story. While it can be a little overwhelming at over 800 pages, I was unable to put it down and when i finally finished it, the only thing that stopped me from going back to the beginning and starting again, was knowing there were 6 more books to read in the series.
A romance adventure about a 20th century gal trying to make it in 18th century Scotland. The story starts off well but gets bogged down with too much graphic sexytime-- some of it mingled with disturbing violence. I was disappointed that the grand romance completely blotted out the more interesting time travel aspect of the story.
One of my favorite reads of all time!!! Excellent writing and story-lines brimmed with history, romance and adventure. A treasure. The Outlander is the first book in a series of seven novels!! based on the love between a 17th century Scottish highland warrior and a time-traveller English woman going back in time from 1945 to his time.
This book was a little too violent for my taste - torture, people beating people (in detail). The romance was charming and fun, just too much violence.
I love this series! My sister and I took a trip to Scotland to see all of the castles, sites, ruins and battle fields. A fabulous read!
BEST book! the series itself is wonderful. Historical fiction at it's very best! Historical fiction/fantasy/mystery/romance/adventure it has everything :) You won't be disappointed.
It's good...very long though.
I love this book. This is the first book I have read that is written by Diana Gabaldon, and I will continue to read her work. The imagery is fantastic, and the connection with the characters is riveting. I could not put it down. When I reached the end I was torn between not wanting it to end and wanting to know where it was going to leave off. It is well written and highly recommended.
